Oncotype DX Results

The results of Oncotype DX® are provided as a Recurrence Score®. The Recurrence Score is a number between 0 and 100 that corresponds to a specific likelihood of breast cancer recurrence within 10 years of your initial diagnosis.

  • If your Recurrence Score result is 17 or below, you are considered to have a low risk for breast cancer recurrence. However, a low-risk score does not necessarily mean that your breast cancer will never come back or recur.

  • If your Recurrence Score result is between 18-30, you are considered to have an intermediate risk for breast cancer recurrence. This means there is a chance that your breast cancer will come back or recur; however, your risk is neither low nor high.

  • If your Recurrence Score result is 31 or above, you are considered to have a high risk for breast cancer recurrence. However, a high-risk score does not always mean that breast cancer will come back or recur.
Each score indicates a specific risk of recurrence. In other words, a score of 18 indicates a different likelihood of recurrence than a 28, even though they are both in the intermediate-risk category.

In addition to predicting your likelihood of breast cancer recurrence, the Oncotype DX Recurrence Score assesses your likely benefit from chemotherapy.1 If your Recurrence Score result is low; you are likely to receive little if any benefit from chemotherapy. If your Recurrence Score result is high, you are likely to receive a significant benefit from chemotherapy. This information, together with information about the chance that your cancer will come back; can help you and your doctor make a decision about the treatment that is best for your individual case.

The Oncotype DX report also includes measurements of the level of activity of gene expression for estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors which are part of the Recurrence Score result. These two receptors are routinely measured by pathologists using a different technique. The level of estrogen receptor gene expression activity may help you and your doctor with treatment planning.

The Oncotype DX report form is designed to be easy to read and use in understanding your breast cancer. To view a sample report form that explains the information provided and allows you to enter different Recurrence Scores to see how they relate to recurrence risk, click on the image below.
