How Can Oncotype DX Benefit Me?

All breast cancer tumors are unique. Genomic Health® scientists, the developers of Oncotype DX®, noted that many of the key differences between individual tumors influence the likelihood of the cancer coming back, or recurring. These differences are associated in part with the level of expression of a certain group of cancer-related genes.

Oncotype DX looks at the expression of this specific group of genes and uses a mathematical equation to translate it into a Recurrence Score®. The Oncotype DX Recurrence Score gives a quantitative assessment of your likelihood of disease recurrence that goes beyond traditional measures.

There are many ways in which Oncotype DX can help you and your doctor better understand your disease:

  • Your doctor will be given a Recurrence Score to determine your risk of breast cancer recurrence within 10 years of your initial diagnosis
  • Your doctor will gain a better understanding of your tumor – critical information in determining the course of your treatment
  • Your individual Recurrence Score will also allow your doctor to assess your likely benefit resulting from chemotherapy1
  • This may help you and your doctor to have increased confidence in your treatment plan
Oncotype DX can be a vital step in your treatment planning process. And remember, you do not need to undergo any additional procedures to get your results.

Oncotype DX is recommended in both the American Society of Cancer Oncology (ASCO) 2007 Update of Recommendations for the Use of Tumor Markers in Breast Cancer and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology Breast Cancer to identify certain subgroups of patients with node-negative, estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer who may be successfully treated with hormonal therapy alone and may not need chemotherapy. To read more about the Patient Guidelines, please see ASCO Patient Guide: Tumor Markers for Breast Cancer.

1 The data on chemotherapy benefit is derived from the NSABP Study B-20 which compared hormonal therapy alone versus CMF based chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.
