The Role of Oncotype DX

Oncotype DX® is intended for use in conjunction with other conventional methods of breast cancer analysis. Together with staging, grading and other tumor marker analyses, Oncotype DX can provide greater insight into the likelihood of systemic disease recurrence. The quantitative assessment of the likelihood of distant recurrence provided by Oncotype DX is important in weighing the benefits vs. the risks of adjuvant chemotherapy in order to determine the most appropriate treatment strategy – increasing confidence that the treatment plan is tailored to the individual patient.

Based on the population for which Oncotype DX was developed and validated, the assay is intended for newly diagnosed patients whose breast cancer is stage I or II, node-negative and estrogen receptor-positive. Oncotype DX now offers clinical experience information for newly diagnosed women who are post-menopausal and have node positive, estrogen receptor positive breast cancer and who will be treated with tamoxifen. Clinical studies in other populations are currently under way.
